Why We Use Bricktor Mesh for Stronger Brick Driveway Borders

Long stretches of brickwork look great, but they need more than good mortar if they’re going to last — especially when they’re acting as a driveway border that will take the weight of vehicles and the vibration of a double-drum roller compacting the road base next to them.
On a recent residential job we reinforced a recycled-red brick stretcher course with Jack Bricktor galvanised woven mesh. The result held up cleanly under compaction and gave the client a border that is both characterful and structurally sound.
Here’s why we reach for Bricktor (and when we choose the welded version), how we place it, and what we saw on site.
What is Jack Bricktor Mesh?
Jack Bricktor is a soft, flexible galvanised woven mesh designed specifically for bed-joint reinforcement in brickwork, blockwork and stone walls. It is 70 mm high and supplied in 46 m rolls — long enough for most residential runs without constant joining.

Bricktor’s main job is to bond the masonry units together and absorb tensile stresses that develop in walls and long runs of brickwork. Used correctly it reduces cracking at corners, at changes in level, and along straight sections that would otherwise open up over time.
Why we chose Bricktor for a driveway stretcher course
This particular border was built with recycled red bricks salvaged from the old Colac brickworks. These bricks have real local character — slight variations in colour and texture that new bricks can’t match — but like any reclaimed masonry they benefit from a bit of extra reinforcement when they form a continuous edge that will be loaded and compacted against.
We laid the Bricktor in the mortar bed of the stretcher course. Once the course was complete we back-filled with recycled crushed concrete road base and compacted it with a double-drum roller. The mesh stayed in place and the brickwork showed no movement or cracking — exactly the outcome we wanted.


Practical benefits we see on site
- Crack control – especially useful on long straight runs and at any change of direction.
- Joint flexibility – the woven nature of Bricktor moves slightly with the masonry instead of creating a hard plane that can concentrate stress.
- Easy handling – soft enough to cut with tin snips and shape around corners or curves without kinking.
- Galvanised protection – suitable for external work in Australian conditions when correctly covered by mortar.
- Speed – a 46 m roll covers a lot of ground; we rarely need more than one or two rolls on a typical residential border or retaining wall.
When we reach for the welded brick mesh instead
On jobs that need a stiffer, more rigid reinforcement (certain load-bearing situations or where the mesh has to span a wider joint), we switch to the welded Jack galvanised brick mesh. Both products are 70 mm × 46 m and both are readily available at Bunnings Trade, so we can choose the right one for the application without delaying the programme.
How we install Bricktor on a stretcher course
- Lay a full bed of mortar on the prepared foundation or previous course.
- Unroll the Bricktor and press it lightly into the wet mortar so it is fully bedded and has adequate cover (we aim for a minimum 15–20 mm of mortar above and below the mesh).
- Lay the bricks in the normal way, buttering ends and keeping joints consistent.
- At corners or junctions, fold or cut the mesh so continuous reinforcement is maintained.
- Allow the course to firm up before placing and compacting the adjacent road base or fill.
Note: Bricktor is intended as crack-control and bonding reinforcement, not as primary structural reinforcement. For engineered retaining walls or heavily loaded elements we still follow the structural engineer’s specification.
