Driveways and Crossovers

The driveway is the private section inside your boundary. The crossover is the section from the boundary to the road, usually across the nature strip, footpath and kerb. That second piece sits in the road reserve, so it needs the right fall, the right build-up, and a Works Within a Road Reserve permit on Colac Otway Shire roads.

Because excavation, drainage, concrete and bricklaying all sit in-house, one crew handles the cut, the base, the drainage and the finished surface. No handing the job between three contractors.

Concrete driveways

Plain, broomed, exposed aggregate, stencilled, coloured or fish-scale finishes. Built off a compacted road-base subgrade so they take cars, utes and farm traffic without cracking at the first wet winter.

Brick paved driveways and aprons

Herringbone, stack, stretcher, 45-degree or square lay, with a paver border edge if you want the driveway tied into paths or an alfresco. Same patterns as our brick paving work, so the house and the drive can match.

Asphalt driveways

A practical, quiet surface for longer runs and rural entries. Often paired with a concrete or paved apron at the garage and at the road.

Compacted rock and rural accesses

Crushed quartz, blue metal, river rock or road base — used as a full driveway or as the long run into a shed, with a hard standing at the house or machinery shed. Useful on farm properties around Irrewillipe, Birregurra and Corangamite where a full concrete ribbon is not needed end to end.

Combinations

Concrete or brick at the house, compacted rock or asphalt down the paddock. Concrete layback at the kerb, matching pavement through the nature strip. Bring the idea — we will make it buildable.

Vehicle crossovers

New crossings, widen, relocate or replace. Urban kerb-and-channel crossings in Colac and Elliminyt, and rural swale / culvert crossings on Otways and Corangamite roads. Where an open drain runs along the road, the crossing needs a pipe and headwalls so water still moves and the crossing does not collapse.

Crossovers and council

On a Colac Otway Shire road, constructing or changing a vehicle crossing is Works Within a Road Reserve permit. That means a permit before the saw hits the kerb — plan of works, public liability and the council fee. Council aims to issue a complete application in about 14 days. Roads managed by the Department of Transport and Planning need that authority instead. Dial Before You Dig Australia is done before excavation.

The crossover stays the owner’s asset to maintain, even though it sits on council land. That is why the base and the drain matter as much as the colour.

How we build it

1. Free site visit and quote

   We walk the access, check levels, drainage, services and whether a permit is required. Clear, no-obligation price.

2. Design and materials

   Surface, width, turning for trailers or machinery, and how the drive meets the garage, shed or house. CAD / 3D if you want to see it before we pour.

3. Permits and services

   Road-reserve permit where needed. Dial Before You Dig Australia. Legal point of discharge if stormwater is part of the job.

4. Excavation and base

   Cut to level, remove failed material, place and compact a clean road-base subgrade. This is the bit that stops a pretty surface from rutting.

5. Drainage

   Fall away from the house, through the crossing, and into the street drain or a pipe under a rural entrance. No puddle at the garage door and no stream down the nature strip.

6. Surface and handover

   Pour, pave or sheet. Edges, joints and clean-up. Walkthrough on completion.
